 Pocklington pre 2021

Pocklington has welcomed so many new members to its community in recent years that we thought you might to know a few interesting things we have found on the internet that even some of us who have been here all our life didn't know.

  • The actor, Ralph Ineson who is famous for his roles in The Witch, Game of Thrones and the last 3 Harry Potter films was educated at Pocklington School.

  • Pocklington airfield was used in the Second World War as it was ufficient in leght to take RAF bombers, it was closed in September 1946 but remains in use for gliders and the occasional hot air balloon.  The airfield is now owned by the Wolds Gliding Club.

  • The old Pocklington railway line dates back to 1847 and was closed in November 1965.

  • Pocklington canal was commerically in use in the 19th century

  • Musician and song writer, Paul Banks, lead guitarist with the group, Shed Seven used to have a studio in Pocklington where he did his songwriting.

  • Adrian Edmondson famous for his role in The Young Ones in the 80s and Bottom in the 90s went to Pocklington School in the 60s/70s.  He claimed to have had 66 strokes on the cane.  Wikipedia quotes him as saying he began to enjoy himself in the 6th form "which involved lots of drinking and smoking and petty acts of vandalism."

  • The 2011 Census recorded the population of Pocklington as 8,337 - it will be interesting to see what the latest Census figures are.

  • The name Pocklington can be tracked back to around 650 AD but is thought to extend back a further 1k years.

  • Pocklington owes much of its prosperity to the middle ages as the local centre for trading wool.

  • Pocklington has previously been twinned with Le Pays de Racan in France, some of the towns signage still shows this.
